Amber in a setting, by David

The setting, with cushions, mirror and lampstand creating a set of distinct shapes against which Amber gave us a number of 15-20-minute poses.
I find artists tend to naturally favour either graphic or painterly approaches. So in this exercise the strong results were the graphic ones; I think the painterly people were disadvantaged.
The set-up encouraged a more graphic response because it emphasised outlines and areas rather than tones and shadow.

David developed some of his sketches, but in a painterly rather than graphic way, with accent on tones and moulding rather than flat shapes.
