Maria and an angular Yorick

MARIA: I started this yesterday, deciding to concentrate on shapes, angles and tones. I’m about to carry on now working on the skull. I haven’t decided yet on using paint or maybe lines and hatching or both
Onsite – Photos – Sketching – Studio
The process of turning observation into a picture
On a nice day, given plenty of time, comfortable seating, appropriate materials, thermos and sandwiches etc etc, what could be more enjoyable than painting an evocative frame-ready landscape? But is that really the best way to produce distinctive art?
Taking photos and heading for the studio? It’s a beguiling shortcut, but do they actually inhibit our experience of the actuality? Do they themselves become the actuality?
Perhaps on-site sketching offers the best of both worlds? A true response that becomes a true reference back in the studio?
