Quick sketches of Molly
This was our first life drawing session for quite a while. The class has been working hard on portraits these recent months and it struck me that we had become very focused on faces, in the process relegating the status of the rest of the figure.
Drawing facial features is an intricate skill. Reverting to the habit of perceiving the figure as a whole needed some kind of loosening-up routine. So this session with Molly started with a lot of two-minute gesture poses, with several goals in mind – completing the full figure; keeping the size under control and not bleeding off the page; looking intently at the subject and hardly at all at the drawing; reducing the number of lines thereby making them more eloquent.
