Keith Vaughan: nudes and abstraction

KEITH VAUGHAN (1912–1977) was a largely self-taught English painter of the post-WW2 period in oils and gouache. He shared accommodation for a while with John Minton, and like him suffered from being gay in a time of considerable repression. Like Minton he committed suicide.
Unlike his English contemporaries his art was influenced by the abstraction explored by European artists like Cezanne, Matisse and Braque. His main subjects were landscapes and male nudes, and over the years his interpretations grew more and more abstract.
