Mimi among potplants

by Peter

The final pose was an hour long, giving decent time for everyone to come up with something good. Peter’s seems very well-observed, with a variety of detail which i can imagine him translating into perhaps an ink drawing…?

Indeed, all of these drawings have potential for development – which always raises my spirits – and some of them already work well just as drawings. Angela’s, for example:

David had to leave early, but this drawing looks like a bit of practical information-gathering to be used in conjunction with photos.

Kathy had time to get into the colours and pattern on Mimi’s trousers:

Steve had an interesting foreshortening problem: Mimi’s left foot looks decidedly shrunken, though the other foot seems about right. After a bit of consideration, we could see that it is the head which is wrong – too big, so that it seems nearer than the foot.

To confirm this, I tried reducing her head in photoshop (below) and indeed the foot now seems a more acceptable size.

It was the other foot that gave Jane problems: she drew it too small at first but redrew it bigger. Otherwise, I thought this turned out exceptionally well as a drawing even without any further development – though I see she has made notes about colours.

I particularly like the head and shoulders, the feeling of the arm hooked back over the cushion.

Eve also got that hooked-back arm nicely, and had no problem with the foreshortening. (She had an easier angle perhaps.) The lively rhythms in the clothing make this full of possibilities (there are photograph references for the face, of course).

  1. Thanks John. It looks much better with the smaller head. The foot could probably still be a touch bigger but it’s almost there.
