Mike from all angles

Five ten-minute poses from different angles. Drawing hair was an important part of this session. Our artists went about it in various ways:

by Angela, with intricate attention to the chaotic rhythms in Mike’s hair.
by Nneka, improving from left to right as the style loosens

Often hair obfuscates the structure of the head. To show texture and pattern in hair (or beard) without losing the form of both the hair/beard and the underlying head is sometimes a challenge.

Nneka’s back view does the job nicely because it acknowledges both linear patterns and tonal mass:

by Esther. A very consistent set of views. Each drawing shines with the personality factor that makes for a good portrait.
By Maria. Nice pencil work on the rhythms of tousled hair.

by David, concentrating in particular on the facial highlights.
by Steve. The linear approach has worked for the beard texture but in makes the hair seem a bit stringy. It is hard to get the feel of mass without a certain amount of tonal modelling.
by Jane, respecting the hair as mass rather than pattern
