Piotr as two figures in a composition •2

Rod chose to draw his two figures separately, then redraw them in combination. This gave him several advantages: less need to anticipate the full composition, and the chance to ‘clean up’ the drawings. The result is most satisfactory: the figures combine to become one shape, and the drawing becomes more stylish.

Then all that’s needed is a bit of attention to background (below) so that the figures are not floating in space.

Sara (below) had to anticipate the space needed for the second figure and probably would not have expected it to stretch out so much horizontally. Cropping was obviously necessary, and actually works well here because it intensifies the attention on the faces of these characters.

The only change I might want to make if I was Sara would be to make the second figure smaller to create distance (below). Somehow the heads in particular seem to need this.

Roger (below) has made the relative figure sizes work well, and in this case set up a different kind of drama between the two characters, with one looking at the other.

And as always, a bit of envisioning background adds to the composition:

The basic drawing of two relating figures has set up the basis of a strong composition. I’m tempted to add some balancing treetrunks on the left… but I must remind myself it’s not my drawing!
